The LEC, or the League of Legends EMEA Championship, is the premiere European franchise competition for the League Championship Series, Riot’s official League of Legends esports competitions. Ten partnered teams participate across three splits and a season final to determine who’s the greatest of the old continent, and somehow, one way or other, it always seem to be G2 who come out on top.
That’s a bit of a joke, but there is no denying the dominance of Caps and co. over the LEC. It is just one of the many exciting storylines in European League of Legends esports, which can be a bit daunting to get into at first. Here is everything you need to know about the LEC in 2024 as the Spring Split unfolds.
Currently, the LEC is in its 2024 Spring Split, one of the three annual domestic competitions for the league alongside the Winter Split and the Summer Split. This is the thirteenth split to run under the LEC branding, a three-week brawl to determine which teams are worthy of a playoff spot, and eventually, a spot at the Mid-Season Invitational.
The split runs between March 9 and April 14 and it is divided into two separate parts. The regular season, from March 9 to March 25, is a single round robin bracket among the ten teams, featuring best-of-one matches throughout. The bottom two teams are eliminated from contention while the rest advance to the playoffs.
The playoffs feature a double elimination bracket, with the top two finishers automatically seeded into separate parts of the upper bracket. The first two rounds of play are best-of-three matches, everything beyond that point is a best-of-five affair, including the grand final.
The winner earns themselves 50 percent of the €80,000 prize pool and a direct invitation to the Mid-Season Invitational. They also get themselves a spot in the LEC Finals later in the year.

However, seeing how Riot’s other big esport, Valorant, is growing towards allowing the occasional short-term spot for teams on merit, and how League’s monetary distribution is taking cues from the successes of that new game (more on that below), it is conceivable that we might see some big changes later down the line when it comes to the LEC franchising system and which teams can compete in each split.

G2’s greatest rivals head into the Spring Split in a strong place, but they are still looking for a statement win over Caps and co. in 2024. With some notable improvements in performances compared to previous splits, this could be their time to shine.
G2 have already qualified for this year’s MSI with their Winter Split victory, and should they repeat their triumph, the team with the most championship points would join them for the journey. With only a handful of defeats over the past few splits, they remain the favorites.
A new formation coming to life from the merger of Excel Esports and Giants, the team will look to improve their eighth-place finish in the previous split, but if their start is any indication, it will be a tough task to turn things around.
Though Karmine Corp already outperformed their Winter Split showing with a whopping two wins, it still wouldn’t be a surprise if they ended up missing out on back-to-back playoffs. Further work needs to be done, that’s for sure.
No one expected much of this youngster-filled squad heading into the Winter Split but they proved everyone wrong with their near-Cinderella run in the playoffs. This time, they won’t be underestimated by fans and rivals alike, though whether the added attention will make them wilt in the spotlight is something we will only know for sure after the split has concluded.
Rogue’s return was much appreciated by fans, and their shock win over G2 suggests a high ceiling for the core, even if they ended up missing out on the playoffs. If they could consistently bring that level of gameplay to bear, anything would be possible – but as things stand, they remain a volatile wildcard with the occasional upset.

The dictionary definition of “mid,” at least as far as European League of Legends is concerned as of late, SK Gaming finished the previous split in fifth and continue to prop up the midtable bracket in the Spring.
The big beneficiaries of Schalke 04’s financial struggles, Team BDS made their biggest splash with a successful Worlds Qualifying Series campaign last year, followed by a disappointing finish in 15-16th. With a third-place result to look back on from the Winter Split, it will be a challenge to dislodge the top dogs on the top of the food chain.
After a strong regular season showing, Heretics fell flat in the playoffs, prompting the removal of Norman “Kaiser” Kaiser for Trymbi. It was a controversial change it remains to be seen whether it will work out for the org.
Much like Team Heretics, Vitality failed to convert a steady regular season showing to anything notable in the playoffs, but they can go toe-to-toe with anyone even if they remain unpredictable – a reverse Rogue, if you will. Certainly one of the more intriguing teams to watch.

Meanwhile, some seismic changes have been announced in the world of competitive League of Legends esports, with a replacement of the traditional revenue-sharing system in most big leagues offering some interesting possibilities for the future. Each region will be impacted differently by these new modifications, and it is worth exploring how it all might shake out.
In a March 14 blog post titled “Adjusting our LoL Esports Strategy,” John Needam, the president of esports at Riot Games, has announced a new business model to ensure the sustainability of global League competitions in the current economic climate. To keep this light on details, the idea is to open up new revenue streams for teams and players across the board by creating a General Revenue Pool (GRP) for the four major leagues, distributing revenues across a larger field, in part encouraged by an increased number of digital cosmetics and other goodies, further encouraging teams and players to establish loyal fandoms.
There are also competitive implications to consider with the LoL esports format changes in 2024 to its biggest tournaments around the world. Heading forward, each of the main regions, including the LEC, will have at least 4 Worlds qualification spots to fight for, which, coupled with the fact that the Mid-Season Invitational’s winner also directly qualifies for the showpiece event (at least as long as they make it to the Summer Playoffs or their equivalent) means there’s always something to play for and therefore some of the so-called “dead rubber” meaningless games have all been eliminated in one fell stroke.
The LEC is the primary European competition in League of Legends, dominated by G2 for most of its existence. The 2024 Spring Split marks the thirteenth split under the current branding of the competition, and its winner will qualify for the Mid-Seasonal International and the LEC Finals, taking home €40,000 along the way.
