What is the LPL? Explained

The League of Legends Pro League (LPL) is the Chinese competition of the League of Legends ecosystem and one of the strongest regions around, featuring 17 teams in total. JD Gaming are the defending champions, winning both Spring and Summer splits in 2023 and getting tantalizingly close to the “Golden Road” – winning all available titles on the yearly circuit, ultimately losing to Faker’s T1 in the Worlds grand final after successfully conquering MSI. They are still the team to beat in the LPL, with a 3-0 start a sign of things to come.

The LPL Spring 2024 split runs from January 22 to April 20. It features a single round-robin group stage that seeds teams into the playoffs. The first phase of the playoffs is a “king of the hill” battle between the third-to-tenth teams, with the top two from there advancing to the second phase, which is a double elimination bracket with the four squads left standing, with best-of-five matches all the way to the end to decide the champion.

In a change, the 2024 Spring Split of the LPL is broadcast from Thursday to Sunday. You can find it on the LPL’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

Then again, this is understandable – after all, we have entered a brave new world of League of Legends esports.

What’s new in League of Legends esports in 2024?

The launch of the 14.1 patch on January 10 led to massive changes on the Summoner’s Rift, greatly changing the gameplay experience in League of Legends we know and love (to hate). Tons of champion changes and a complete item system revamp (headlined by the removal of the Mythic item system) are the biggest adjustments, but the addition of new Void monsters and the changes made to the Rift Herald and Baron Nashor have also significantly impacted the gameplay – and this is just the beginning.

Over on the competitive side, LoL esports also saw some major format adjustments to its biggest tournaments around the world. While most of these primarily impact Western regions, there’s an elephant in the room well worth discussing here: the winner of MSI will now directly qualify for Worlds, providing an additional slot for their region (as long as they qualify for their region’s Summer Playoffs), with each main region starting with a base of 4 Worlds slots. Additionally, the international competitions (MSI and Worlds) saw their formats changed in a bid to ensure that there are no meaningless dead rubber games late in the group stages, meaning no one can ever take their foot off the gas pedal.

Everything you just learned about LPL Spring 2024 – summarized

  • The LPL is one of the biggest League of Legends esports regions in the world
  • JD Gaming was one of the strongest teams in the world in 2023 and they are the favorites in LPL Spring 2024
  • The 14.1 patch of League of Legends was one of the biggest gameplay shakeups in recent years, and it had a significant impact on competitive play
  • With MSI winners directly qualifying for Worlds as an extra regional seed, the rest of their region also benefits from their victory
